New Plumber Celebrates First Year Anniversary

Justin Davis is heating things up.  His plumbing and heating business, SuperiorHydronics Inc., is one year old and has serviced residential clients all over the San Luis Valley.

Justin is a Master Plumber with solar certifications and training in geothermal installations.  He installs and repairs high efficiency boilers and furnaces, using hot water the smart way to heat up your home or business.
Justin worked with Donna Wehe at the Small Business Development Center (589-3682) when he was starting out on his own.  She asked him about the name he chose for his business.  “I’m really into using water in the most efficient way.  I support any sort of green energy-saving model possible.  I recommend on demand water heaters and have installed a number of those to boost efficiency. Higher efficiency means lower bills!  Hydronics means ‘using water to heat’ so I chose that to be part of my business name.”  He also works with homeowners and contractors to install water filtration systems and will do new construction, remodel, or repair plumbing and heating work.
Justin has 9 years plumbing and heating experience including working as a journeyman plumber for Steffens Quality Plumbing and Heating for 4 ½ years.  He grew up in Arizona and moved here from Denver.  He is here to stay and loves living in the Valley.  He and his wife like to garden, hike and camp.  Justin is a musician and an avid disc golfer and hopes to sponsor a tournament this summer.  Justin can be reached at (719) 937-3275 or www.superiorhydronics.com.

HHS Regional Director Salazar to speak to SLV Business Leaders

HHS Regional Director Salazar speaks to SLV Business Leaders
March 26, 3:30pm, SLV Small Business Development Center

DENVER, CO—All interested in learning more about the Affordable Care Act(ACA) and the many benefits provided to small business owners are invited to attend a presentation on the Affordable Care Act on March 26, 2012 at 3:30pm, SLV Small Business Development Center, located in The Depot, 610 State Avenue, Alamosa, CO 81101.
Marguerite Salazar, Regional Director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will provide information on various aspects of the ACA along with specific information on how this will affect you and your family, business and community.

For too long, too many hardworking Americans paid the price for policies that handed free rein to insurance companies and put barriers between patients and their doctors. The Affordable Care Act gives hardworking families in Colorado the security they deserve. The new health care law forces insurance companies to play by the rules, prohibiting them from dropping your coverage if you get sick, billing you into bankruptcy because of an annual or lifetime limit, or, soon, discriminating against anyone with a pre-existing condition.

Come and learn more about how this health reform is making a difference for the people of Colorado.

New Business in Alamosa is here to get you in shape

Donna gives personal attention to every client
Who doesn’t want a “Better body, better Life?”  At Body Tune-Up, Owner Donna Mabry hopes she can help you understand that philosophy.
Donna moved to Alamosa from Kansas City in 2007 when her husband Rob accepted a position at the SLV Regional Medical Center.
Moving to a small town opened up lots of different job opportunities so she worked part time at the (then) Bed and Breakfast, Avalon Wellness Center and answered phones for a real estate office when she first moved to Alamosa.  “I liked working a variety of jobs and learning new skills.  Alamosa is really great for that – there are so many opportunities for a person to explore various interests.”

Donna was Cathy Jackson’s first client when Cathy opened Just 4 Fitness in 2008.  “I bought some of her equipment when she closed her business and the family moved to Denver last year.”  When Donna decided to open her gym, she stayed at the same location, 420 State Avenue in Alamosa, because it was already known as a fitness studio and it has great exposure.  She did minimal remodeling to increase the use of the space and was able to add more cardio and a variety of strength equipment.

Small group classes and personal training are the main focus of the gym.  The small group classes are limited to eight people which allows for personal attention to a clients’ form in performing the exercise.  People reserve their spot on a sign-in sheet or by calling Donna.  The one-hour class consists of a cardio warm-up followed by strength training  in a circuit timed to music.  Each class offers a lot of variety, works different muscle groups, and people of all fitness levels are welcome to participate.  Donna also offers private training as the schedule permits.  Her flow of clients has been steady since she opened her doors in October.

Donna Mabry used the services of the SLV Small Business Development Center (589-3682) to discuss the project, buying the equipment, how to track income and expenses and deal with sales tax.  She did run her own electrical company in the past so she had some previous knowledge about running a business.  She felt like the counselors at the SBDC were extremely helpful whenever she had a question.  “They are still a great resource, even now that I have been in business for a while.”

Donna rents out the space to other fitness instructors.  Currently there is a Taekwondo and Yoga class that uses the space.

She said she hopes that she can be instrumental in motivating people to have an overall healthy approach to living.  “80 % of obtaining fitness goals comes from mental motivation.”  Her approach is to keep the classes varied, personal, fun, fresh and interesting.  The vibe that is created at Body Tune-Up is one of a healthy body, mind, and soul.
