Espanola SBDC Client & Artist Giovanna Paponetti Receives a letter from Pope Benedict XVI
Artist and SBDC Client Giovanna Paponetti recently released her new book, "Kateri Native American Saint -The Life and Miracles of Kateri Tekakwitha," published by clear light publishers in Santa Fe, NM. The 21 paintings of Kateri's life story are located at St. John the Baptist church at Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. Giovanna sent a signed copy for His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, and to her great surprise received a letter from the Vatican. "His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI was pleased to receive the kind gift sent for his acceptance. He appreciates the devoted sentiments which prompted this thoughtful presentation. The Holy Father gives the assurance of a remembrance in his prayers and sends his blessing."
"I am grateful that my book has found its way to the Vatican as this is the place where Kateri's Sainthood will be decided, hopefully soon. As I began to reach new heights in my career as an Artist I did not feel equipped to handle or have the knowledge to know what to do. Once again Julianna Barbee, Director of the SBDC at Northern New Mexico College, and her staff have been there to guide me with their expertise for my continued success."- Giovanna Paponetti.

New Business Cooks with Spelt
Cranberry oatmeal….chocolate chip (Ghirardelli chocolate pieces)….Wedding cookies….decisions, decisions! This is what you will be deliberating over when you decide to try out Lenore Reinhart’s “Speltlicious Cookies.” Made with spelt flour of course. More on that later. Lenore has always had a passion for baking, and she began experimenting and learning techniques as a teenager. She owned a coffee house in Taos, New Mexico for six years and then as the pastry assistant at the Coyote CafĂ©.
Over 20 years ago, Lenore was discussing the benefits of cooking with and consuming spelt flour with her Naturalpath. Using spelt flour is making a comeback in North America. Spelt is a non-hybrid distant relative to present day wheat. Spelt’s uniqueness is derived from its genetic makeup and nutrition profile. Spelt has high water solubility, so nutrients are easily absorbed by the body making it easy to digest. It is significantly higher in protein and vitamin B than wheat, and spelt is high in both simple and complex carbohydrates. It is a superb fiber resource. But hey, enough about that, how do the cookies taste? They are delicious…thus the name of her company…Speltlicious. Lenore’s logo was created by artist David Woodman and is a caricature of her serving her freshly made cookies.
Lenore was providing cookies from a special recipe she created to friends and family. They encouraged her to start a business and sell them to retail stores. Lenore lives in LaJara and was quite familiar with the Taos area, so she began using the Taos Food Center, a commercial kitchen that has equipment, services and support to help the budding food entrepreneur get started. She officially opened for business in November of 2008. She also contacted the San Luis Valley Small Business Development Center for additional guidance and support.
Currently, Lenore sells her cookies in 6 stores in New Mexico and 10 stores in Colorado, mainly in natural food stores, independent co-ops or family owned grocery and gift stores, including Whole Foods in Santa Fe. She is scheming about other product lines and is currently working on a web-based store. The best way to contact Lenore is her cell phone at 719-588-9329. The SLV SBDC may be contacted by emailing Donna Wehe at donna@slv-sbdc.com. You can purchase her cookies at the Valley Co-Op in the Villa Mall in Alamosa or the Organic Peddlar in Del Norte.

Sonshine Acres is a New Business in the Monte Vista Area
Sonshine Acres Grains and Goods is your source for whole grain living! Robert and Rhonda Glover are your suppliers for grains and seeds, as well as a variety of grain mills, mixers and accessories. They are an independent, authorized dealer for Bosch and for L’ Equip.
They also offer baking supplies, from yeast and RealSalt™, to bread pans and bags.
The advantage of making bread with freshly ground flour is the improved nutritional value. Vitamins in the flour begin to oxidize soon after the flour is milled. Rhonda explains, “People don’t realize how easy it can be to make their own bread, and it is so much better for you. You do have an initial investment in the machines and grains, but it is well worth it for the return when you think of it as an investment in your health.”
To help people learn about the fun and ease of making their own bread, Rhonda offers bread making classes at their home southeast of Monte Vista. They have been giving basic whole wheat bread classes and next month will begin classes for artisan breads. The classes cost $10 and are 2 – 2 ½ hours in length. Everyone gets to play with the dough to get a good sense of what good dough should feel and look like, and get a feel of the different things you can do with basic bread dough. The schedule can be found on the Sonshine Acres website, http://www.sonshinegrains.com/ and is posted at the Adams Street Emporium in Monte Vista and the Valley Food CoOp in Alamosa.
While living in Denver, the Glovers had been wanting to move to a smaller community. When Rob got the okay from his business to work from home, they felt like “this was the time” for the move. They have family in the San Luis Valley, so it was an easy next step to locate here. The Glovers have a friend in Denver with a similar grain business, so they had some experience with the products, as well as the concept for their company. They saw this business as an opportunity to start slowly and create a second income. Their business has been well received and people have been excited to have them here. Rob and Rhonda like the friendliness and support that they find in small town/rural living and look forward to being involved in the community. Rob met Donna Wehe from the SLV Small Business Development Center at a Kiwanis meeting. Deanne Elliott followed through with Rob and Rhonda as part of assisting and promoting new entrepreneurs in the Valley. The number for the SLV SBDC is 587-5151 or go to coloradosbdc.org.
The Glovers are looking to expand their business to a location in town. This would give their customers easier access to their products and classes, as well as giving better exposure to their business. For information or see their products, they can be reached by phone at 719-206-3062, email at info@sonshinegrains.com. They look forward to showing you their goods and starting and supporting you on the road to better eating.

New exterminator business in southern Colorado
New Exterminator Business based in Manassa Serves Entire San Luis Valley
Spiders, ants and mites…oh my! Who ya’ gonna’ call? Specializing in residential maintenance, Kristi Jarvies, owner of 5K Pest Management, is the newest exterminator in town and can also mitigate crickets, silverfish, stinkbugs, cockroaches, centipedes and more. Kristi has already treated over 40 homes and cabins since starting her business in June of 2010. Based in Manassa and totally locally owned and operated, Jarvies can service the entire San Luis Valley.
Over 20 years ago Kristi’s dad started a similar business in Albuquerque and called it 5K because he had 5 kids. Kristi and her husband Mitchell also have 5 kids, so they registered the business in Colorado with the same name. Kristi learned the business working alongside her father as well as attending several intense certifying classes. It has taken more than two years to learn everything she needs to know such as chemical use safety and identifying different pests and their habitats and characteristics. She has passed all her tests and each year has to keep up with continuing education to stay licensed. All of the certifications come from the Department of Agriculture. “Chemicals are always improving and becoming safer and more effective. Everything we use is biodegradable and wont’ hurt humans or pets. My dad says that some household products under your kitchen sink are more harmful than what we use,” Jarvies commented. She feels her business has a niche over other exterminators because she doesn’t require a yearly contract.
“I had my house serviced from another company and they didn't get rid of my bugs. Kristi came in and serviced my home and now my bugs are gone. Her pricing is more reasonable and she is more dependable than the other company,” remarked Sandy Smalley from Mosca, a satisfied customer. Kristi contacted the San Luis Valley Small Business Development Center for some assistance with marketing and business planning. She also attended a workshop held in conjunction with Ann Marie Velasquez and the Conejos County Chamber. Kristi may be contacted by calling (719) 843-5028 or (719) 580-9411.

Tumbleweeds Gift Gallery is a New Business in Fort Garland, Colorado
Whoa! What is happening in Fort Garland, Colorado? Long standing antique owner Sarah Vanderlaan is retired and the new owners have opened up Tumbleweeds Gift Gallery featuring southwestern gifts and home dĂ©cor. You can’t miss the beautiful bronze elk inviting you to stop in and browse for unique gifts including rugs, hats, pottery, candles, mesquite lamps and homemade soaps, just to mention a few of their better selling items.
Scott and Jennifer Abbes, originally from Tennessee, have been travelling to the Southwestern states for the past 12 years as tourists. They finally decided to move to Colorado, buying Sarah’s house while still running their on-line business. Scott sells air filtration products under his other business, Clean Air Solutions LLC. Crispin and Iona Free from San Luis are their store managers.
Scott and Jennifer have felt welcomed into this community and see the huge potential as the first town travelers come to when entering the San Luis Valley on Highway 160 from the East. Scott has ideas for selling to hikers, tourists and locals. He is offering a “Sand Dunes” or “Hikers” survival kit, complete with mosquito repellant and sunscreen. Jennifer mentioned that early shoppers have purchased their jewelry, blankets and wall art, commenting that the quality is like Taos or Santa Fe but the prices are much better.
The Abbes have decorated their home with items such as mesquite lamps and southwestern rugs. When they looked around, they realized that other stores in the area were not selling these unique home décor items and decided to take a chance that others would like access to these as well.
Scott built the shelves and they re-did their cement floor with an acid wash. The place has so much charm inside and out, not to mention coffee and homemade cinnamon rolls, brownies and cookies, that it is a must stop on your next visit to Fort Garland. The store is open Monday through Saturday, 9-6 and on Sundays, 1-6. They are members of the local business association and contacted the SLV Small Business Development Center. To contact Scott or Jennifer, call 719-376-4149.

Mermaid Cafe now open for dinner in Creede Colorado
What are mermaids doing hanging out in the old mining town of Creede, Colorado? Several years ago when Sharon Brown decided to open up a cafĂ©, she thought to herself, I want to really stand out and be different. She reminisced about one of her favorite songs called “Carey” on a Joni Mitchell album, where she mentions “the Mermaid CafĂ©” in her lyrics. Mermaids are known as the “sirens of the sea” and can “draw you in,” an effect she hopes to do with locals and tourists. The hand carved mahogany sign was created by John Homes of Todos Santos, Mexico. He also helped create the Boathouse in Creede.
The café is located on Main Street in a building that was damaged from a fire in 2006. When she was remodeling it, she was mindful to keep a part of history which is the warm, original brick wall, built in 1890.
Every restaurant owner faces unique challenges. One of the challenges in Creede is the boom and bust cycle that exists with the summer tourists and the quiet winters. Coming from Denver with over 25 years of management, entertaining and catering experience, Sharon fell in love with this quaint town which boasts a plethora of artists and home of the Creede Repertoire Theatre. She has local photos and paintings for sale by local artists that decorate her walls.
“My goal was to offer a different selection of food than what you can get at the other restaurants in town. I try to make my salads, soups and breads with the healthiest ingredients as possible. I like to be creative, so in addition to my regular menu, I rotate specials and have just added evening dining. Some of the patrons’ favorites are Salmon with Wasabi, Chipotle Meatloaf, Thai dishes and several Italian and Mexican specialties.”
The hours of the Mermaid CafĂ© are 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday – Saturday, closed Thursdays. Sharon contacted Donna Wehe at the San Luis Valley Small Business Development Center at 587-5151 for assistance in marketing and financial analysis.
“Come on down to the Mermaid Cafe and I will buy you a bottle of wine…and we'll laugh and toast to nothing and smash our empty glasses down” by Joni Mitchell. There’s a community table near the kitchen so people can come in by themselves and join in local conversation and fellowship. Sharon can be contacted by calling 658-1112. The Mermaid CafĂ© is located at 115 North Main in Creede.

Del Norte home to Dun-Rite Glass New Business Owner
Dun-Rite Glass
Dun-Rite Glass, focusing on quality service, is now open at 520 Spruce Street in Del Norte.
Pete George and Elizabeth Weaver are owners of the new business. Pete George has 26 years in the glass business. Elizabeth manages the office.
Pete is a certified auto glass technician with Sika, DOW and Essex manufacturing corporations. He is also certified by AGRSS, the All Glass Replacement Safety Standards Council.
“I take pride in my work,” said Pete. “I feel a responsibility for the safety of my customers and will never take shortcuts when replacing and installing a windshield.” Many people don’t realize that a windshield is part of the structural integrity of a vehicle. If the windshield pops out, for instance in a roll over, the roof of the vehicle may be smashed, increasing the risk of serious injury to passengers. Air bag release on the passenger side could also cause an incorrectly installed windshield to pop out. Dun-Rite Glass uses only quality OEM products (Original Equipment Manufacturer), further adding to the safety features of their work. They provide a lifetime warranty on workmanship and also offer free chip repair for their windshields to the purchasing owner. They offer a $20 chip repair service for any windshield and can usually have the job done in a half hour.
Dun-Rite Glass has their focus on auto glass, residential and heavy equipment, but can accommodate just about any glass job you bring to them. They will do rescreening, thermal units for windows, glass or mirror cutting and will work with any glass. They are the subcontractors with A & M Vinyl in Monte Vista, handling the glass and screen work for the handmade windows. They are now setting up equipment to make folding “phantom” screens for patio doors.
Pete and Elizabeth have lived in Grand Junction and Denver, but decided to move back to the San Luis Valley where Elizabeth has family in South Fork. They like the friendliness and quiet of a small town and look forward to building their business in serving the entire valley.
They have joined the Del Norte Chamber of Commerce and are glad to be part of the community. Pete and Elizabeth met Donna Wehe, Small Business Development Center, at a Chamber meeting. From the SBDC they were able to receive assistance in the technical issues of getting a business set up such as registering with the state and getting bookkeeping methods in place.
Dun-Rite Glass will have a ribbon cutting on Thursday, July 15th. Their Grand Opening will be Saturday, July 17th with free hot dogs and a raffle. Stop by to visit them and find out what a quality glass service can offer to you. They are open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. They also can provide service after 5 pm, by appointment.

Their phone number is 719-657-2000. Check out their website at www.dun-riteglass.com.

New Niche Carpentry Business in Monte Vista, Colorado
New Niche Carpentry Business Opens in Monte Vista
New business owner Ben Beckner’s motto is “Delivering Quality Through Integrity.” Beckner comes from a lineage of talented carpenters and many locals might know of his grandfather Myron’s intricate work as a woodworker and craftsman.
While attending Leading Edge in the evenings, he was putting in long days doing the detailed finish work in the newly remodeled Bistro Rialto Restaurant on Main Street in Alamosa. Beckner Custom Carpentry, LLC, opened for business in the spring of 2010 in its first retail location, moving out of the 100 year old barn on his farmhouse. The new shop is in the Weiss Cleaner Building, behind Community Banks in Monte Vista.
The new site will be more central to the jobs he works on and will also provide a direct retail spot for anyone needing custom trim and woodworking. No job is too small or intricate for Ben. He loves the challenge of the “hard to match” or “make it look unique” jobs. He purchased a new molder that enables him to match trim and offers over 500 different profiles in almost any specie of wood; and next to his lovely wife Jennifer and four young children, it is his pride and joy. A satisfied customer commented, “He has lots of potential with his new molder for custom work to match vintage trim, to replace a piece of trim on furniture, or to make something unique for his customers. He can also use different types of wood than what may be available in a lumber yard.”
The phone number for his shop is 852-2992 and you can view his work and learn more about him at his website, becknercustomcarpentry.com.

New Art Gallery Opening in Monte Vista, Colorado
What’s the story behind the new gallery in Monte Vista? All Good Things, Gallery and Gift Boutique, is located at 1021 Second Avenue, across from the bowling alley and is owned by Jenna Ford. Jenna, who has a degree in art, has always had a real passion for art, and she has had an idea for an art gallery and gift boutique in Monte Vista for a long time. For the past eleven years she has been busy with her family potato farm and the Mansion Bed and Breakfast businesses. Jenna has been involved with the DREAM TEAM and Monte Vista Chamber as a volunteer and thought, there is something more that downtown Monte Vista deserves. Finally the timing felt right to Jenna and she acquired an 1896 home that she has been renovating, with as much emphasis on historical restoration as is feasible. Drawing inspiration from former owner Hope Ortiz, Jenna has completely rejuvenated this structure inside and out. While word spread around the community of a future showcase for artists, Jenna was busily scraping, sanding, texturing and painting. Her labor of love has now paid off with a beautiful gallery and gift shop. Many artisans are looking forward to displaying and selling their original artwork and unique gift items in this location and have already contacted her. Jenna wants to offer the possibility of themed shows and wants to tie in with Wild Thyme Gallery owned by Laura Murphy about six blocks away to market their shows and events together. Jenna strongly believes in giving back and getting involved in your community and encourages small business owners to join their chamber, Monte Arts Council, use resources like the SLV Small Business Development Center, or whatever groups that can help them advocate, teach and network their business. Jenna is also now selling the beautiful laser-cut panels designed by artist Tord Boontje that adorn her gallery windows. She can be contacted at (719) 849-0891 or www.goodthingsgallery.com for upcoming events. Don’t miss her Trunk Show and Open House featuring Autumn Teneyl clothing on Friday and Saturday, Memorial Day weekend. Free and confidential business counseling is available from the SLV SBDC at coloradosbdc.org or call Donna Wehe at 587-5151.

Shop Rite in Monte Vista, Colorado is a New Business
Shop Rite in Monte Vista
Monte Vista Shop Rite is not just another retail store; it is a discount specialty store that provides what the community wants and needs with unique products and services. With over 35 years of experience in retail, Anita Wazny, owner, said “I know that without customers there is no business. We are customer and market driven and will do what is necessary to maintain a good and healthy relationship with our clientele and will strive to find the right inventory to keep them happy.” She feels fortunate to have employed Erica Medina, who was manager of the former business at this location, and has been a tremendous help in getting the new store up and running. They share a vision to have the store be more like a trading post, catering to local needs. To fulfill this purpose, they have placed a suggestion board by the front door and ask customers for input on items they would like to see on the shelves. They offer free coffee and doughnuts daily to show appreciation for their customers.
The store carries new and unique items as well as much of your daily need items. Among the new products you will find in the store are Italian charms with which you can create a one-of-a-kind bracelet, watchband or keychain. The store is an outlet for fresh baked goods, jams & jellies from the Miller Family Bakery. There is also a consignment area for local craft items that now showcases “cut & curl” candles made by local artisan Bill Mathias. The parking lot has market space for vendors available for a minimal fee.
Anita currently lives in Albuquerque, but was born and raised in Montrose, Pueblo and Denver. She really likes being her own boss and has long wanted to move back to a small town in this state. When she saw this building was at auction, it seemed like the perfect fit for her. Anita contacted the Monte Vista Chamber for information, then followed with contacts with Dick Davidson of the SLV Development Resources Group and Donna Wehe at the Small Business Development Center for information and resources.
Donna and Deanne Elliott, SBDC Counselor for Rio Grande County, helped Anita to refine her business plan in preparation for a loan application, as well as shared marketing and merchandising information relating to our area. The SBDC offers free and confidential business assistance, runs low cost workshops and facilitates the Leading Edge Program. To contact the SBDC, call 719-587-5151 or go to www.coloradosbdc.org.
Anita feels it is important to be a contributing member of the community, so has enrolled Shop Rite as a member of the Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce. The new business, located at 1935 Grande Avenue, is in a convenient location to the residents of the east side of Monte, but is worth the trip for everyone else. They look forward to seeing you soon for their Grand Opening.
The phone number for MV Shop Rite is 852-8850. The store is now open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm; Sundays from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Papers of Distinction in Alamosa, Colorado
Papers of Distinction, LLC
Sally Lopez is not just another retailer in downtown Alamosa. This woman has many artistic talents that she has used to express her faith and give back to her community. She has operated her store for over 11 years and offers a wide variety of retail paper, scrapbooking, stamping and educational materials. She also can provide design and printing of business cards, flyers, invitations, laminating, color copies and book binding. She sells balloons and other special occasion products for the party planner as well.
But sitting on her counter near the cash register, one can't help but notice the beautifully arranged musical CD entitled, AGAPE, with a photo of the church that sits on the hill overlooking San Luis (La Capilla de Todos Los Santos). With each CD sale, the proceeds benefit the order of the Theatine Fathers who have served as parish priests in the San Luis Valley. Sally and the Agape Musicians recorded the CD at the Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church in San Luis and at Sally's Grandma Bea's home located across from the church. Then the final mixing and mastering was created by Don Richmond at Howlin' Dog Recording Studio in Alamosa. The music of Andy Manzanares, Jeffrey Jaquez, Sally Lopez, Brother Juan Marinoni Ruiz and Danny Quintana will fill you with the meaning of Agape: "The Love of God." You can find unique, religious "shaker" cards that Sally has created as well. So if you haven't frequented her store on State Avenue, stop by and browse around. Sally is full of surprises! Not to mention that she also plays guitar with Mariachi San Luis, a group well-known for their musical talents from ages 8 yrs. to 60 yrs!

Sandboarding at the Sand Dunes National Park
Sandboarding at the Great Sand Dunes National Park
NPS Photo by Patrick Myers. Woman carving a turn at Castle Creek Picnic Area. Sandboarding, sledding, or skiing on sand can be enjoyable - but only with the right gear and conditions.
Where can you rent a sandboard? One place locally is at Kristi Mountain Sports, located in the Villa Mall in West Alamosa. This business is known as the “specialists in human and gravity powered sports.” Owner, Eric Burt, said that “a small group from Adams State College came and rented the boards for their trip to the Dunes and they had a blast.”
These boards are designed differently from snowboards and rent for $18 per board per day and they have 7 boards available. They also have 2 sleds and a staff member said, “the people that rented the sleds said they had just has much fun on them as they did on the boards.” The sleds are the same rental fee.
Cardboard doesn’t work! Sandboarding, sledding, and skiing are permitted anywhere on the dunefield. From the main visitor parking area, it's a minimum 2/3 mile hike to get to the medium sized slopes. Have a great time enjoying this unique national treasure!
In April, 2010's edition of Oxygen Magazine, Stefani Jackenthal writes about sandboarding at the Sand Dunes. The article is located on page 132, and is titled "Total Body Fitness." Local sandboarder and fitness enthusiast, Chelsea Vittoria, is quoted in the article as saying, "You think you're in good shape and then you hit the dunes! But it's so much fun and easier than snowboarding beacuse the boards are smaller and thinner, making them easy to turn - and the sand's so smooth."

House of Pets in Alamosa, Colorado gets ARC loan
HOUSE OF PETS BENEFITS FROM STIMULUS FUNDING PROGRAM
Alamosa, Colorado
House of Pets Owner, Mike Lopez, wondered how he was going to catch up on bills that seemed to mount up during the recession. How was he going to replenish his inventory, begin a new marketing campaign and keep his doors open? He felt he had budgeted to the bare bones but still wasn't coming out ahead. Then he heard about the Small Business Administration's one time offer to help business owners during these tough times by paying off existing debts with a no-interest loan. Luckily, 1st SouthWest Bank in Alamosa had been preparing for this program and the lenders were happy to assist him. Of course, when you are working with the government, there seems to be a never ending request for paperwork. When he finally thought he had submitted everything, Greg from the bank called him and said he needed projections. Of course, this is right when Mike's computer was in the repair shop. So then he contacted Donna Wehe at the Small Business Development Center for assistance. With the help of his CPA, Donna, and Greg, he was finally able to produce all the required documents. Greg was persistent to make sure the SBA received the application and finally the funding came through. Even though it seems like a small amount to most lenders, it was a huge relief to Mike. Since then he has added some new inventory, cleaned up his shop and is welcoming the warm weather with planned outdoor activities. House of Pets has been in Alamosa since 1984 and is located near the WalMart shopping center on Del Sol Drive. He offers the only store in the San Luis Valley to fully service your aquarium and a wide selection of fish along with other pet products. His puppies are not from a puppy mill but from a highly qualified breeder and Mike can be reached at 589-3773.
